• Canadian ETA

A Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An ETA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETA.

With a valid ETA, you can travel to Canada as often as you want for short stays (normally for up to six months at a time).

Required documents for a Canadian ETA:

    • Complete an online application form.
    • Digital passport copy (bio-page).
    • If you already have a current Canadian visa, you do not need a Canadian ETA.
    • You can apply if you nationality is in the list of the Visa Waver Country (see the “Who can apply” tab).
    • If you’re a citizen of an ETA-required country or territory listed “Who can apply” tab and arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship), you don’t need an ETA to enter Canada. You still need a valid passport.

    Citizens from select visa-required countries

Citizens from select visa-required countries may be eligible to apply for an Canadian ETA, instead of a visa, to travel to Canada by air. However, these travellers need a visitor visa when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including a cruise ship.

You’re eligible to apply for an ETA if you meet all 3 requirements:

    • You’ve held a Canadian visitor visa (temporary resident visa) in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid United States (US) non-immigrant visa. Your US nonimmigrant visa must be valid on the day you apply for your ETA, but doesn’t need to be valid when you travel to Canada.
    • You’re coming to Canada for a temporary stay (normally for up to 6 months).
    • You’re flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport using a valid passport from one of the eligible visa-required countries.

If you do not meet all of the requirements, you need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to travel to Canada.

How long can I stay in Canada as a visitor?

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

If you’re allowed to enter Canada, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months.

    • If that’s the case, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might also give you a document.
    • If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until either your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first. Super visa holders who enter Canada after June 22, 2023 can stay for up to 5 years.
    • If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. If you arrive at an airport that uses primary inspection kiosks, you may ask the border services officer for a stamp after you finish at the kiosk.

      • Please note: An additional 5% will be added to the total amount as this is what we are being charged by the banks for transactions.
